Diary 2
November 2009
I hope people
have enjoyed Bonfire Night this week. It can be a lot of fun, but I
also know that just a few selfish people abusing fireworks can make
life a misery.
That’s why in recent years, the law
has been strengthened against those who misuse
fireworks. They must
not be sold to anyone who is under 18. The Government has also
introduced powers for the police to fine those who cause
disturbance late at night, let off fireworks in the street and fine
youngsters who carry fireworks in public. The law is clear on anti social
behaviour: It’s simply against the law to possess fireworks in
public if you're under 18 and it’s against the law to throw or set
off fireworks in the street.
Fireworks yobs can be hit in the
pocket. On the spot fines of £80 for disorder can be issued against
anyone causing a nuisance with fireworks at this time of the
year.
Last week I met
Olympic gold medallist, Jonathan Edwards. What an honour, but there was a
serious reason too.
He is touring the country talking about the Olympics in London
2012. There are all
sorts of ways that Redditch can be an Olympic winner. Local firms have already
benefited from contracts linked to the site and there will be more
chances. Contact
Business Link for information about sessions they’re running for
small businesses keen to play a role.
I know young
people are really excited about the Olympics and schools can
benefit from ‘Get Set’ the Olympics Education
Programme. We might
not all be able to get a medal, but we can all play our part in
making London 2012 the best Olympics yet!
