Diary 7 December 2009

What new services would you like to see at the Post Office?  That’s the question being asked by the Government in a new consultation launched last week.

The Post Office is a great British institution that has been part of our communities for over three hundred years. I know how deeply people in Redditch care about the future of our local Post Offices.

The Post Office has more branches than the high street banks combined. It is ideally placed to bring banking services back to the heart of people’s communities.  It could provide savings accounts especially for children or help local businesses get access to banking.  It could work with the local Credit Union to help people get better access to their great work.  If you think it would be good to be able to have more bank and saving accounts in your local post office, let me know and I’ll feed your views in to the Government’s consultation.

It’s that Christmas shopping time again.  Things were pretty in busy in Redditch town centre when I was there last weekend, but I know things have been tough too in the last year.  That’s why I was delighted to hear that the Government is making over £50,000 available to Redditch Borough Council to support and promote our Town Centre.  I’m keen to see how this will be spent – other towns have used the money to give businesses or local groups the chance to take over empty shops or to promote the town.  We need action and imagination from Redditch Borough Council with this Government money!
