Diary 26
October 2009
I recently
signed up to the 10:10 campaign. This is a personal pledge to cut
my carbon emissions by 10% by the end of 2010. I’ve started by turning down the
heating, turning off lights and using public transport more, but
there are lots more good ideas on the website at www.1010uk.org.
I’m also challenging others in Redditch to do the same –
particularly Redditch Borough Council. Other councils around the
country have signed up so I don’t want us to be left
behind.
Sometimes it
feels that there is little we can do to stop climate change, but
this campaign shows us that from the individual to the
international, we can make a difference. Last week whilst debating this
in Parliament, the Government agreed to make £20m available to help
Government departments make more progress in cutting their
emissions. The
Department for Energy and Climate Change is already signed up – I
want to see more!
This is even
more important in the run up to the conference in Copenhagen in
December where an international agreement will be
negotiated. We can’t
just leave this to world leaders – just like with Make Poverty
History, individuals joining together will make sure international
leaders get the message and do the right thing! In November, I’m organising a
meeting in Redditch with one of the Energy and Climate Change
Ministers so that Redditch people can get involved – watch this
space for more information!
