Thanks to six Redditch Heroes

Thanks to six Redditch Heroes!

Jacqui Smith MP’s 2009 Christmas Card Competition was a great success!  People across the town nominated their heroes to be one of the finalists photographed on this years’ Christmas card and to have their stories featured on the website.  Entrants included local police officers & politicians, voluntary workers and council employees to name but a few.

Jacqui Smith says:

What all of the entrants had in common was their willingness to give up their own time for the benefit of others and in doing so making Redditch a better place to live.  It was very difficult to choose between those people who work so hard for our community, but after much deliberation I was able to select six unsung heroes.

They were:

Sylvia Summers leads the Redditch Beaver and Cub Scouts providing sessions, activities, outings and camps for boys and girls across the town.

Rev Maureen Dew organised music sessions for children as well as looking after her parishioners at the Bridge Church, Headless Cross.

Peter Styler has organised the Redditch Poppy Appeal for 50 years supporting and remembering hundreds of servicemen and women.

Lorraine Shannon has coached her young team to league and cup victory with Redditch United Girls Football Club.

Veronica Allen chairs Caribbean Roots Connection organising numerous cultural events and bringing young and old together.

Pauline Thorne set up and runs Boomerang which recycles furniture helping local people furnish their homes and protecting the environment.

They are a smashing group of people and I hope they know how much people do appreciate their hard work.  Please click on the PDF link at the end of this article for their full stories, they are definitely worth a read!

Finally I would like to thank everyone who has taken part in the competition and especially to the family of Lance Corporal Dale Hopkins who allowed me to dedicate the project to his memory after he was nominated as a Redditch Hero.”

As their prize the heroes enjoyed a visit to London including a tour of Parliament.
