Diary 9 Sept
2009
The credit crunch has depressed our economy,
cost jobs and almost closed down the World’s banking
sector. But the worst
aspect of the last year has been on individuals who face losing
their homes – often through no fault of their own.
Instead of letting the recession run its
course, as some Conservatives have suggested, I am proud to say
that the Labour government has taken action across the board to
tackle the crisis head on – at a global economic level and by
helping individuals.
This week a publicity campaign has been
launched to ensure that people in Redditch are aware of the
practical help and advice that is available for those who face
difficulties meeting their mortgage commitments.
Concerned homeowners can visit www.direct.gov.uk/mortgagehelp,
or contact the National Debt Line on 0808 808 4000 for impartial
advice.
Last week I held surgeries
in supermarkets. It
was a new experience for me but I think that it worked really
well. I was able to
listen to people from Redditch at a place that was convenient to
them. I hope that I
will be able to make them a regular addition to my existing
surgeries and door knocking. Thanks to Tesco’s, Morrison’s and
Sainsbury’s.
