Jacqui Smith MP praises progress on the fight against
crime.
1 November 2006.
Jacqui Smith has welcomed figures from West Mercia Police showing that since the Spring of 2003 recorded crime has fallen in North Worcestershire – including
Redditch – by a over a quarter.
The figures also show that worrying crimes of violence have fallen by 26% and robbery is down by 44%.
Jacqui said.
“These figures show that good progress is being made in driving down crime. More officers,
the introduction of Community Support Officers and new laws are really having an effect. I am pleased to see that burglaries in our area have dropped by a whopping 57.9% since 2003 and violent offences by 26%. Robberies this spring were 44%
lower now than they were in the spring of 2003. These aren’t just statistics
– they represent fewer victims of crime and they continue a downward trend. The Labour government - working with the police and local communities have cut the chances of being a
victim of crime nationally to the lowest on record. We are seeing that success in Redditch too!”

Notes
Figures compare the latest quarterly performance figures (Apr – June 2005/6) for West Mercia with the same figures for Apr – June 2003 – the oldest similar records
available.
The chances of being a victim of crime were first measured in the British Crime Survey in 1981.
