Diary 4
January 2010
The New Year has brought some very
sad news with the death of Albert Wharrad. Albert was Redditch born and
bred. He returned
here after fighting in the Second World War and lived here with his
beloved wife Margaret. His working life was spent in
the spring industry in the town. People who worked with him tell
me that he was always willing to speak up for those around
him.
He
put that talent to good effect in his public life. He is well known across Redditch
for his time serving the town as a councillor and council
leader. Redditch
Borough Council always punched above its weight with him at the
helm. But he always
had time for the individuals who came to him with their
problems. He
understood that politics is about how people – whoever they are and
wherever they come from – are treated. With Albert that was with
unfailing respect and courtesy.
He
has led Redditch Labour Party for over fifty years – a historic
achievement. Whilst
he has been recognised for his efforts by successive Labour
leaders, it is typical of Albert that he steadfastly refused to
accept any sort of award for this service and
achievement.
This sums up a
man who devoted his life to political and public service, but never
looked for personal gain or recognition. For many people, it is his wit,
wisdom and humanity that will be best remembered. He was a steadfast friend and I
will miss him enormously.
