Jacqui Smith demands Redditch
Borough Council play fair with Redditch
youngsters
Jacqui Smith MP
condemns Conservative controlled Redditch Borough for failing to
apply for government funds to make swimming free for Redditch
youngsters.
Under a scheme
announced earlier in the year the government is bringing in free
swimming for the over 60’s – it is also introducing free swimming
for under 16s in some authorities. To get the funding for the under
16 scheme authorities must apply and local Conservative Councillors
decided not to bother.
They had until
15 September to express an interest in the scheme but decided at
their Executive Meeting on 3rd September against
it.
Jacqui
said.
“Parents in Redditch will not be
able to understand why Conservative Councillors turned their back
on this scheme. We
should all want children to have more to do and opportunities for
exercise. The
government is willing to put £25 million on the table to get
children swimming for free – Redditch should apply for its
share.
Conservative Councillors are
forever moaning about the level of government support their
Councils receive but this decision just goes to show the difference
between political statements and
actions”
Jacqui also urged the Borough
Council in the summer to get the front of the queue for finance of
a new pool for Redditch.
